UEFA EURO 2008™ - And the winner is...
Published: 22/07/2008
The UEFA EURO 2008™ European football championship provided sporting highlights
and entertainment during June for the European football fans. The influx of
football enthusiasts and tourists meant a good start to the summer for hoteliers
in the eight cities across Switzerland and Austria which hosted the various
games as they reported up to 231% revPAR increases during match days compared to
the prior year.
The daily results reveal great performance of the cities tracked
by STR Global over the match days. Three group games each took place in Basel,
Bern, Zurich, Geneva, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Klagenfurt and Vienna. Vienna and
Basel hosted the quarterfinals, semi-finals and the final. The graph shows the
revPAR (revenue per available room) increase overall during the group games from
7 June to 18 June. Salzburg, Geneva and Vienna showed the biggest increase
compared to the same day last year. As Vienna hosted four more games after the
group stages, the city's hoteliers benefited from the additional demand.

Despite the bad weather, the early exit of the Swiss and
Austrian teams and some complaints about high prices, many people followed the
tournament in the stadiums or on big screens or in front of the television. The
cities not only provided fans with entertainment in the stadiums, but provided
'fan miles' and public viewing areas which attracted more fans to the hosting
cities to create a special atmosphere during the championship. According to UEFA
the fan zones within the eight cities had capacity to host around 320,000
visitors which helped to cater for all fans who arrived without a ticket.
The
additional demand generated by the event helped hoteliers to boost revPAR
compared to last year. The UEFA EURO 2008™ has been the biggest event for the
Austrian and Swiss cities in recent history. Whilst the tournament may have
displaced some usual business for hotels in the host cities, the cities hope to
gain from an overall improvement in image, putting the cities 'on the map' and
attract more visitors in the future - making the Swiss and Austrian hoteliers
very happy indeed, despite losing out on the actual championship title.
